2 Tips on Goals and April Fools

April fooling with goals

Since April brings focus to the fool, I thought I would mention two points on goals and fools.

But first some words on the ‘fool’.

In the Tarot deck – The Fool’s Meaning

The Fool is a very powerful card in the Tarot deck, usually representing a new beginning — and, consequently, an end to something in your old life. The Fool’s position in your spread reveals which aspects of your life may be subject to change. The Fool portends important decisions ahead which may not be easy to make, and involve an element of risk for you. Approach the changes with optimism and care to gain the most positive outcome.

What the Fool card tells us – it’s important to take time to be sure that you are “looking where you’re going.”

Only fools and charlatans know everything and understand nothing. – Anton Chekhov

The ship of fools is an allegory, originating from Plato, that has long been a fixture in Western literature and art. The allegory or parable depicts a vessel without a pilot, taken over by force or persuasion by those who are deranged, frivolous, or oblivious, and seemingly ignorant of their course. This mob is willing to kill anyone in the way, and to drug the captain if necessary. The true pilot, who knows the stars, the wind, and how to stay on course, is considered useless by the mob. The court jester or fool was considered by many to be one of the most powerful people of the royal court for one simple reason – the fool was the only one who could tell the king the truth and keep his head.

  1. The April fool we need to be most wary when it comes to our goals is, of course, ourselves. We are the fools that take the ‘side trips’, make the excuses, resort to ‘magical thinking’, and many other distractions – while fooling ourselves about achieving our goals.
  2. Fooling around with goals is encouraged. It is good to experiment and try many different strategies and tactics to find those that best suit us – those that optimize our progress. Fooling around with goals is not necessarily playing the fool with our goals.

Lyrics

Fool, you didn’t have to hurt her
Fool, you didn’t have to lose her
Fool, you only had to love her
But now her love is gone
Fool, you could have made her want you
Fool, you could have made her love you
Fool, you only had to love her
But now her love is gone
Gone now the love and laughter
See yourself the morning after
Can’t you see her eyes are misty
As she said goodbye
Fool, you didn’t have to hurt her
Fool, you didn’t have to lose her
Fool, you only had to love her
But now your love is gone
Fool, you only had to love her
But now love is gone
Fool, you could have made her want you
Fool, you could have made her love you
Fool, you only had to love her
But now her love is gone
Fool, you didn’t have to hurt her
Fool, you didn’t have to lose her
Fool, you only had to love her
