Out Maneuver Manipulation

In business today, the inflexible die young

The biggest obstacle to change is understanding change.

manipulation change manueverChange – to make the form, nature, content, future course, etc., of (something) different from what it is or from what it would be if left alone: to change one’s name; to change one’s opinion; to change the course of history.

This is the irony of our day: In an age of rapidly accelerating technology the difference between a perpetually successful enterprise and a struggling, dysfunctional also-ran comes down to the people who make up those companies. Even more, it’s how those people interact as they form and reform into teams to stay maneuverable. Pat Gelsinger, the CEO of VMware says “liquid organization” is the only organization that will work.  Are You Maneuverable?

When it comes to making changes at the personal level, people generally focus on manipulating externals, including behaviors and habits, in hopes of extending the dynamic of change to current circumstances in attempts to influence the future. More often than not, what we see is that most people want others, circumstances and outcomes to change while they basically remain unchanged.

An example related to the quote above would be someone who needs to learn to be more team oriented and plays the role of a team member, but remains self-centered and out for number one. We see this all the time – people ‘acting’ one way at work and then being completely different at home.

While the process of change can begin with externals, real change, fundamental change at a personal level always involves a seismic shift in perspective, world view and understanding – something that truly changes us, the person we knew ourselves to be. When this type of change happens, external changes are bound to manifest because a different person is taking action and making decisions.

So, the question for business leaders, team leaders, team players and anyone else who wants to be more nimble, flexible and responsive in business or life is – Do you want everything else to change while you remain the same or are you really willing to change?

If we don’t want to be changed, then we’re just maneuvering our manipulation while living a role or hiding behind a mask – which we may not even see, while others do.

A lot of potential and possibilities can go unrealized when we resist change.

A lot of people resist transition and therefore never allow themselves to enjoy who they are. Embrace the change, no matter what it is; once you do, you can learn about the new world you’re in and take advantage of it. – Nikki Giovanni
